WHEN YOU'RE FEELING DOWN...
When you're feeling down, its easy to keep moving in a downward spiral. When you realize you don't have a lot of money, credit cards are piling up. You tell yourself, it'll be alright. When you're stocks lose a lot of its value and you wish you could eat out with your friends. You tell yourself, it'll be alright. When your car won't start and the check engine light goes on, you think to yourself, it'll be alright. I can ride my bike and try to put a grin on your face that I need the exercise. When you ride your bike and you have a flat tire, you tell yourself, I have an extra tube, I can change the tire. Two day later you ride your bike to school, it'll be a alright you say. A mile later you get a flat tire. You don't have an extra tube. On your way home, you fight the tears. Strangers wizz by in their cars and strangers walk by you. You look down as you walk, thinking if a cigarette is in order to help ease the pain. You realize, it won't. As you're crossing the street to head to your house, you hear a horn, a stranger in a pickup truck asks you if you want to throw your bike in the back and hitch a ride. You smile back and point, I live right there. You realize that it will be alright, it will be tough but people will always be there to help.

Celebration
CELEBRATION
With the recent passing away of Michael Jackson, I realized that there aren't many musical legends alive.
There is one that comes to mind. Madonna. Madonna has an active career spanning decades.
Today, she released Celebration, a greatest hits album. The item that makes this standout is the iTunes - Deluxe Video Edition.
For $29.99, you will get 68 songs and music videos. 38 songs and 30 music videos to be exact. An extensive collection worth every penny!

Rest and Relaxation?
REST AND RELAXATION?
I have taken the past week off work and with only school to focus on, I find myself incredibly busy, in a good way.
It has been great hanging out with my best friend, spending time at home relaxing and taking many many naps.
1 more week of vacation to go!

Taking My Time - Vanilla Wafers
TAKING MY TIME - VANILLA WAFERS
Aloha all,
Every week; hopefully more often, I will try to slow down life and enjoy one special thing we take for granted.
After class, I had 45 minutes to kill until the bus arrived, so I decided to stop by the vending machine. Besides your usual chocolate and chips, were multiple packs of vanilla wafers for $.85.
As I opened my package and walked towards my bus stop, I took a small bite of the first wafer. Crunchy, sweet and delicate. With a pep in my step, I greeted everyone along my path. Upon arriving at the bus stop, I had an idea; I took a wafer and removed the first layer, ate it like a rabbit would a carrot; at least as seen on tv. Unlink the first layer (which lacked icing, the 2nd layer, had double icing, double delicious!
After eating the rest of the wafers in that manner, I realized life is good.

1 Week later.
1 WEEK LATER
What a difference a week makes!
Last week, I would just worry about making it to training on Saturday morning then off to swim class and hanging out with Travis.
This weekend, the same, but I had to plan my meals and cook for the week, do tons of reading for school and barely had time for my DVR.
Busy, but good busy, I like staying ahead of the game and I'm glad I have the time and resources to do so.
ha! 6 A's here I come! (maybe 5 A's and a B).

My First Day of School
MY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
Aloha! It has been a while! I thought Twitter would kill my blogging habits and though it slowed it down, Twitter can't express all the thoughts in my head...
My first day of school was surprisingly easy. Classes were easy to find, instructors were friendly. All of my anxiety were for nothing. I took the bus arriving at school an hour before my classes started because I feared missing it. I didn't have a problem with the bus to and fro and the bus is really great! The bus goes directly from Hawaii Kai to UH and doesn't stop by Aina Haina nor Kaimuki, not to mention the bus stop is across the street from my last class.
Oh yeah, did I mention I only have 1 final? The rest of the instructors are foregoing finals in lieu of projects and essays due the week prior.
Sorry so short. Miss you blogspot.

NEW BALANCE 768
NEW BALANCE 768
I am sad to say that my favorite pairs of shoes are worn out. Its especially haunting as the line has been discontinued. Heading to the New Balance store to try the new model 769. I've looked online for 768, but my weird shoe size aren't to be found.
I enjoyed these shoes so so much, I gave up Nike shoes and Nike +, which never really fit me right but had awesome software.
===
July 13 update - I originally meant to post this last week but I'm one lucky mug.
Endless.com has free shipping to Hawaii. Not to mention the $99 shoes.. were only $55. Not only that, if you spent over $100 you get $25 off... so I spent $85 on 2 brand new shoes.
I heart Endless.com and I heart New Balance.

Recession
RECESSION
We all probably know all the bad things going on in the world; so I'll quickly talk about the good things I have noticed with the recession.
The major thing I have experienced is the shopping experience. Customer service agents are 200% nicer than last year.
I went to Toys R US and was asked if I needed help 5 times in about 10 minutes.
Hopefully the level of customer service keeps up when our economy recovers.

Another Year
ANOTHER YEAR
Yes. Today, I am another year older.
Another year wiser? probably not. Another year richer? definitely no.
I might not be financially well off, but I am fortunate in so many other ways. I am the healthiest and fittest I have ever been. I am the happiest I have ever been. Finding a happy medium between spending time with others and my time alone.
What am I going to accomplish the next year? Who knows. I enjoy staying free and unpredictable.
Maybe a job in South America. Maybe going back to uni. Maybe selling everything I own and going around the world.
ima wo ikiru.

Another Race.
ANOTHER RACE
This past Sunday, I participated in the 3rd Annual Hibiscus 1/2 Marathon which all the funds go to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
I haven't been training in running long distances and I hadn't exercised since the Honolulu Triathlon so my expectations were to take it east and run 10 minute miles.
I was very happy to finish. It was extremely hot.
I finished with a time of 2:06. I'm very happy with my time. Granted the winner came in at 1:10... lol
Off to the next race!

Apple Early Adopter - SUCKS!
EARLY ADOPTER
I love Apple products. I love buying their products the 1st day it comes out.
Unfortunately, this has a major setback. Since AT&T only allows an upgrade every 18 months, I will have to wait until December to get a full price upgrade.
Oh well.

Why? After 11 months of membership, I went to the gym 11 times.
I figured I have remained active on my own and its time that me and 24 hour fitness move our separate ways.

Miss USA
MISS USA
I rarely watch Miss USA but this year I decided to tune in and maybe catch some great moments like when Hawaii's own Brooke Lee won the title and later went on to win Miss Universe.
Unfortunately, the contest is more evaluated on looks than on brain power as I spent most of the time laughing at the contestants. Really! It should be a comedy show...
The biggest laughter of the night came when Miss California during the interview section.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Though there should be a clause that an opinion must be in a complete sentence and that the sentence make sense.

Practice Triathlon
PRACTICE TRIATHLON
This past Sunday we had our practice triathlon. Yes, we come in all ages, shapes and sizes. If we can do it... Seriously, you can to!
Ever wonder what goes into a practice triathlon?
1) SETUP - BRIEFING
Setup is important. You have to arrange your things for a quick transition from one event to another. There is also a quick briefing about the conditions and the route.
2. SWIM
The first event of the triathlon is swim. Normally we start on land and run into the water, this time around we decided to start in the water. Our swim route was to the windsock and back. About 500m swim.
3. BIKE
After swimming, you run to your transition area, put on your socks, shoes, helmet, sunglasses, grab your bike and go! This time out, we rode from Kaimana Beach park, over Diamond head through Kalaha and to the Aloha gas station, and back (TWICE!)
4. RUN
The last event of the triathlon. Normally a quick 3 mile run in itself, but after swimming and going over Diamond Head 4 times sometimes your legs and calves don't like to work as they normally do. Just breathe and push hard until you feel your kick come on!
5. AFTER PARTY
Yes! Its time to celebrate! High 5's, hugs, and food are in order! This is Team Jet Hawaii training group and yes, I wouldn't have it any other way!
Go Team!
You're all rockstars!

MS WALK
This past Saturday was the MS at Ala Moana Beach Park. It was great to be out there walking to support those with Multiple Sclerosis.
It was a great turnout this year. The walk though short was great in spirit. At least 500 people were there to show their support and to fundraise to help cure MS.

Bad Day
BAD DAY
Have you ever had a bad day that just wouldn't end, but you have mini breaks in-between so you're not completely insane and suicidal? You know the kind where you forgot your wallet and you're at the Enterprise rental car returning the car and fortunately they have your credit card information already. Then you realize you're going to pick up your car from the Saturn dealership, and you have no idea how you're going to pay... then fortunately they take personal checks... then you think if they can take it without an ID, then you realize they took it down the 1st time you dropped off your car... then you pick up your car and you think all is well and the air condition system isn't working (they forgot to plug in the AC receiver). Of course you did this after work and they close at 1800 so you have to do it the next day... so you have to drive down all the way to Nimitz again from Hawaii Kai, but then you might as well go to Pacific Air Cargo to ship your book, because you called Hawaiian Air and they charge 100 US DOLLARS to check in a bike (completely unassembled - in a box) and this is the weekend where your friends invite you go to to Kauai because the fares are $28 each way, but you have your Dr. Appt at 0800 then Saturn, then Pacific Air Cargo. You realize you're just destined to go. Not to mention you're sick from training on Thursday... swim and run at Ala Moana and work is the busiest ever because someone took a day off so you can't go home.
Hopefully all bad karma was expelled yesterday.
Here's to a beautiful day.

Lava Tubes
LAVA TUBES
Hiking in the Lava Tubes was an awesome experience. Its not for people who are scared of the dark or small spaces.
It was great to be underground and see the different texture types. Definitely something that has to be experienced in person as my camera (though a decent camera) cannot capture the ambiance and mood of the lava tubes.
At the end of the lava tube, it was really cool to be underground. We all decided to turn off our flashlights. You could hear the water dripping and my imagination just ran wild. I imagined a huge spider eating me whole. (creepy!) Fortunately there were no bugs!
Sorry for the photo layout. I normally embed them, but I've been trying the photo uploader via Blogger

That particular word is something I thought I'd never be able to use to describe myself.
This past weekend, we had our practice triathlon. Swim, bike and run. Granted the lengths weren't very long, but its a starting off point.

2009 Honolulu Triathlon
2009 HONOLULU TRIATHLON
Are you kidding me? Seriously?
My goal this year was to do a triathlon, you know just one of those things to remove from my bucket list.
I will be doing a triathlon in the future, but it will not be the 2009 Honolulu Triathlon.
We received news yesterday that the organizers have scheduled the event on a day when there are jellyfish.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? SERIOUSLY? This isn't the 1st Annual Honolulu Triathlon.
This is seriously just a shame. There are people who travel from all points of the Earth to pour their heart and soul only to be informed that there will not be a swimming portion in the event this year.
Instead of the usual triathlon: swim, bike, run. This year's event will be a run, bike, run.
Consider me peeved.

2 WEEKS
I am still in disbelief.
2 Sundays ago, I was learning how to ride a bike. Last Sunday, was my first time riding on the street in a pack.
Today, we had our first time trial and I can't believe the progress I have made.
Just goes to show. Anything is possible.

Beyond Exhausted
BEYOND EXHAUSTED
I am just tired and sore and tired and sore and tired and sore.
Yesterday, our training group broke into two: ones that are running first and the other cycling first. I volunteered to run 1st since I like to run.
I am doing the 2009 Honolulu Triathlon Sprint (which is a shorter version of the full triathlon), with that said, everyone agreed since I just did the Honolulu Marathon that I should run with the group running the longer distance (the running group was further broken down into 2 groups - one training for the full triathlon and the other training for the Sprint Tri).
My running group took off quite quickly, I stayed behind (about 20 ft. behind), as I liked to run at my own pace (and start off slowly). 6.5 miles later (felt like 13.1 - but that's just me)... Time for cycling...
Cycling was grooling. I took all of my energy to keep up. Granted we were on trainers and basically like spinning class, but I didn't want to spin way slower than others.
Around 2000 training was completed, I was SOOOO happy I stopped by L&L and got a BBQ Chicken Musubi, which I inhaled before leaving the parking lot.
As soon as I got home, Epsom salt bath was started, and I started rolling my calves on the foam circle thing that I have and fortunately, I woke up this morning, just tired, not as sore as I expected to be...
Going to run my bike again tonight... arrgghh!

Learning to ride...
LEARNING TO RIDE
Yesterday I woke up with anxiety. I didn't know how to ride a bike and here I am training with a Team Jet Hawaii for the 2009 Honolulu Triathlon.
An hour after the training started, I was just in shock. I couldn't believe it. Here I am going stopping/going, fast, switching gears, riding against/with 30 MPH winds. Beat part is... No blood! (I never fell!)
Granted its in a huge parking lot... but considering I've been trying to learn for a while, I can't believe what some 1 on 1 training can do. That's exactly what I had, 1 on 1 time with a trainer, Mike (pic below). Yup, he's the man...
Mahalo Mike!
This is just the beginning. GO TEAM!

At least I like my new Triathlon jersey!
Hopefully, I can finish training and finish the 2009 Honolulu Triathlon

Yup, here she is. She's still getting use to her new home. Lots of things to familiarize her with through updates.

I still don't have a name for her yet, but she's very fast (with 4GB RAM) and surprisingly has lots of storage (1.5 TB HD @ 7200 RPMs).

An Open Letter to Amazon.com
Dear Amazon.com,
I am utterly amazed on how amazing Amazon is. I am surprised its not amazing.com
I placed an order that never arrived, yet USPS shows the package as delivered. This really surprised me as I have ordered 100s of items on Amazon and I have never ever had a problem.
To my surprise, my whole order has been replaced and will be shipped with upgraded shipping. I was honestly expecting Amazon to refer me to USPS.
Mahalo nui loa for replacing my order.

Australia - Needs your help!
AUSTRALIA
Living on a rock sometimes makes me quite complacent and forget about the world that is going on around me. I know times are tough with the credit crisis and the current state of the economy but I was really surprised the lack of American Media Coverage regarding the fires in Victoria, Australia.
Don't take my word for it. Google it. Visit BBC (best world news).
Help those who could really use your help. With the exchange rate a little goes a long way!

Lazy
LAZY
Ugh! I can't wait for the summer to begin. This cold snap, lack of sun at 6AM are making life really hard.
I've ran once since the Honolulu marathon back in Dec 2008. I've set my alarm for 6AM, but its just ridiculously cold. I've just given up on working out for this month and now set my alarm at 7AM.
I have noticed because of my lack of physical activity:
1) I have a hard time sleeping at 10pm (now sleeping around 11)
2) I don't have deep sleep (I wake up 1-2 times a night)
Sun oh sun! Please come back nice and early so I can get back to running and hopefully a great night's sleep.

An open letter to University of Hawaii.
AN OPEN LETTER TO UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII
Aloha,
My name is Max and after a 5 year hiatus of being self-employed. I have saved up enough funds to attend school full time to finish my degree.
My main concern with the process of going back to school is how disjointed University of Hawaii system is. I understand there are different schools within the system and for logistic reasons beyond my comprehension applying to schools within the UH system is more complicated than reading self-employed tax returns.
My 1 suggestion: have a centralized database for official transcripts.
If a student applies to UH system, he/she would send official transcripts to 1 address. Should the student decide to attend another university within the UH-system, that school can also access that secured database with official transcripts.
This is where my problem lies. I have applied and have been accepted to UH-Manoa. After analyzing my options and financial situation, it would be beneficial if I attended UH-Hilo, due to lower cost of living.
In addition to costs of applying to UH-Hilo, that particular university is now requiring me to request official transcripts. Why the UH system doesn't communicate with its fellow members to help its students is beyond me.
It would not only be beneficial to the students to have to only send 1 set of official transcripts, but also to the UH-system itself. Instead of having each school devote resources to transcripts, there can be 1 centralized location for official transcripts.
Hopefully, the UH system can move forward and greater assist its future students.
Mahalo for your time.

APPLE = GREENEST COMPANY?
Apple has recently touted its recent MacBook and MacBook Pro to be the greenest on the planet.
One thing that Apple can work on is packaging.
Seriously? You sent a product the size of 2 CDs in a container that can fit 15-20 of the same product.
I love my Apple, but today its leaving a sour aftertaste.

NEXT INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL DESTINATION
Where to go? For my 29th birthday, I definitely want to spend at least 5 days in the Philippines in another island than Luzon.
Upon doing my research, I was surprised the amount of low cost carrier airlines that fly to/from Manila and all over. There are plenty of airlines to choose from (I'll list by website in case you want to take a peek): tigerairways.com, flyseair.com, cebupacificair.com, asianspirit.com, airphilippines.com and even more!
Here is a pic of Cebu Pacific's Route.
I am really having a hard time... I'm debating on Thailand, Vietnam, or mainland China. I haven't been to any of those places.
So little time, so many places...

Goodbye, Mr. Reliable
MR. RELIABLE
I can't believe its been almost 4 years, and yes, its time for us now to part.
We've paid bills together, gone shopping, read the latest news. We've been to 3 continents together, met countless friends, kept in touch with our closest siblings, and make a couple of appointments here and there.
This is been an unbelievable run and I am sad to see you go, but as you know sometimes the grass is greener on the other side.
I am surprised that there are many people out there that want you, so off you go to your new home. Hopefully, you will be taken care of as well as I have taken care of you and vice versa. Show them the kindness and ease of the new world that you opened my eyes to.
I can't believe you still fetch a premium price after all these years. Yes, I know what I did isn't the best thing, selling you on eBay. But it just goes to show that you are still a top notch product.
Wish you all the best with your new owner. Fortunately, he's in Maui. You won't have to go anywhere cold, and maybe I can stop by and see you sometime.
PS. You had a winning bid of $459.00. I can't believe it! Going to miss you mucho!
Your friend always,
-Max

Australian Open
AUSTRALIAN OPEN
Last night I stayed up until 1AM watching my pick to win the 2009 Australian Open.
I am very upset that Venus Williams has lost in the 2nd round, and so are my neighbours.
Just to share the magnitude of this loss... let's talk about some facts... Venus Williams ranked 6th in the world. 6'1" tall, 7 Grand Slam titles. Carla Suarez Navarro (you're not alone if you've never heard of her...) ranked in the 40s, 5'4" tall, 1st time in a Grand Slam event. I am just shocked. Ms. Carla Suarez Navarro never served over 100 mph. After the 2nd set and Venus was up a break on the 3rd, I thought the game was hers...
Ugh! I really could talk about this for days. I was thinking I'd love to see Venus in Melbourne (my fav city)... If I went down there this year and saw her lose, I'd lose it. SERIOUSLY.
I'm tired and cranky. blah.
