Friends and Family - SPAINTALK - Sending Packages...

Friends and Family,

Please do not send me anything.  I know you love and want to send me things of Hawaii and things that remind of me home, but to be honest, I want to punch a wall everytime I receive a notice from the Correos.

The postage system here in Spain is completely messed up.  Yes, F*****d up.

I've received countless packages from all over the world (yes, i'm a shopaholic) but any packages from the United States must be held in customs in Madrid.

Then I have to complete a form, sign it, including a list with the things you have sent - I AM NOT PSYCHIC.  Needless to say, I am still fighting with ADTPOSTALES for a package that was received in Spain on February 6th.  YES, and I don't think I am getting the package anytime soon because apparently the documentation provided was not sufficient - SO they have to send another paper from Madrid to Ferrol, with a CODE, so I can then upload the documents online.

#FML.

Love you, but please don't send me anything, unless I ask for it.

Live Like We're Dying...

Live Like We're Dying - Kris Allen

This song was released over a year ago, but I still love this song.  It's message... Life is short, Live like you're dying...

Sometimes we fall down, can't get back up
We're hiding behind skin that's too tough
How come we don't say I love you enough
Till it's to late, it's not too late

Our hearts are hungry for a food that won't come
And we could make a feast from these crumbs
And we're all staring down the barrel of a gun
So if your life flashed before you,
What would you wish you would've done

We only got 86,400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell them that we love them
While we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying

And if your plane fell out of the skies
Who would you call with your last goodbye
Should be so careful who we live out our lives
So when we long for absolution,
There'll no one on the line, yeah

Yeah, we gotta start
Looking at the hands of the time we've been given
If this is all we got and we gotta start thinking
If every second counts on a clock that's ticking
Gotta live like we're dying

We only got 86,400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell them that we love them
While we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying

Like we're dying, oh, like we're dying..

We only got 86,400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell them that we love them
While we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying

You never know a good thing till it's gone
You never see a crash till it's head on
Why do we think we're right when we're dead wrong
You never know a good thing till it's gone

Yeah, we gotta start
Looking at the hands of the time we've been given
If this is all we got and we gotta start thinking
If every second counts on a clock that's ticking
Gotta live like we're dying

We only got 86,400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell them that we love them
While we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying

Like we're dying, oh, like we're dying..

We only got 86,400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell them that we love them
While we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying..

Check Engine Light...

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT...

My check engine light came on... so what do I do?

Take my car to the mechanic? Oh hells no!

I bought a OBD2 car reader, which was $50 on Amazon.  LINK HERE!!

Yes, instead of taking my car to the mechanic and having them charge me $75+ just to plug this in and get some codes, then go online to translate the codes...

I'll pass, the whole process took me just 4 minutes.

First you have to know where to plug this in, so just google it! Car make + OBD2, it'll tell you exactly where to plug it in.

Second, take down the codes, I would wait to reset it until your mechanic gives you the clear.

Next, don't be fooled by subscription places when you try to translate your codes!!

Go to http://www.obdii.com

Just answer a few questions and voila! You'll know if its super serious or something dumb.

PS. If you're not sure, call a mechanic friend and make sure you're not going to die by driving your car.

Apple and Sage Porkchops

APPLE AND SAGE PORKCHOPS

It's been a while since I have posted about food and even longer since I posted about food that I actually made!

The recipe is actually simple, its just boneless porkchops, various spices, onions and apples.

I was apprehensive at first because I really don't like my entree to be on the sweeter end, that's what dessert is for, isn't? The spices really cut the sweetness of the apple and the apple juice and makes the meat much tender!

The porkchops was great with red wine, this time a merlot and instead of my usual starch of rice, I decided to try potatoes, and that was great too.

Ha! Want the recipe?  Let me know!

It was nice to have a fancy dinner at home!

I'm going to eat my last porkchop left over.

nom nom nommm...

Cable... To Cable or to Stream?!

Over a year ago, I decided to give up my cable box and save myself nearly $100/month in cable bills.

For about a year now, I have scoured the web, trying to find my favorite shows.  I am very happy to say how successful the hunt has been.

Most of the shows I watch are available on:
http://www.hulu.com (top chef, Naruto)
http://netflix.com (stream TV shows, movies - largest library!!)
http://www.cwtv.com/ (America's Next Top Model - woot!!)
http://abc.go.com/ (Desperate Housewives and Wipeout)
http://www.logotv.com/ (Ru Paul's Drag Race!)
http://www.mylifetime.com/ (Project Runway)

In addition to steaming online via computer, some are also available for free with a corresponding mobile application.  ABC and Netflix have Apple Store applications that allow you to stream the television shows online, on your iPhone, on your iPad.

There are certain shows that are a must buy, and why not?! Saving $100/month, you're allowed to purchase other media in lieu of.  On iTunes, ANTM is only $8.99 for a whole season so you can watch it over and over until your heart's content.

There are so many ways to stream now that you can even watch your shows on your TV.  You can buy a Roku Box, a Xbox 360, Wii or PS3 and you can stream shows via Netflix.  If you buy a Blu-ray player now, you can probably also stream Netflix or Amazon's Video on Demand.

Cut the cable and upgrade your WI-FI!

Songs... Lyrics... Max?

One of my favorite lyrics that I find myself listening to more often is Jason Mraz, "I'm Yours".

I know the song is old, but I just love the 2nd half of the song about not complicated things because our life is short.

I guess what I'm be saying is
there ain't no better reason
To rid yourself of vanity and
just go with the seasons
It's what we aim to do
Our name is our virtue

But I won't hesitate
no more, no more
It cannot wait I'm yours

Well open up your mind
and see like me
Open up your plans
and damn, you're free
Look into your heart
and you'll find the sky is yours

Please don't, please don't, please don't
There's no need to complicate
Cause our time is short
This, oh this, oh this is our fate, I'm yours

Open up your plans and damn, you're free!

Nervous...

Nervous...

About the wrong things.

The semester starts up again next Monday.  I am rather nervous about not having a parking pass this semester (I totally forgot and they will not give me one though I have 135 semester hours)

Excited...

I like being busy, working, school, training, homework, video games, emails, blogs, relationships, reading, holidays, birthdays, christmas, gifts, thanksgiving, vacation, text messages... the more I do the more mental clarity.

I am also nervous and excited to see everyone visiting me in the next couple of months.  My BFF is coming next month and my sister the month after, add in a trip to Big Island and Palm Springs that'll pretty much be a busy end of year.

Hopefully, I can squeeze in some surfing in there and of course training for the Honolulu Marathon.

Cell Phone Bills - How much are you paying?

Aloha all,

I've been recently ranting and raving about technology and the cost of things, so this time this particular blog will combine both.

Most people have heard of cell phone companies such as: ATT, Verizon, Sprint and T-mobile.

Though these companies offer great service and value (not to mention the newest and flashiest phones) if your monthly bill is the most important thing, you may want to look at a pre-paid cell phone company.

Pre-paid cell phone companies get a bad reputation as most associate these plans with phone with lesser capacities, bad service, plans that are not conducive to most people, but it's 2010, and there are many options depending on your needs.

If you're a Blackberry user and you use it a lot, your bill might look like this:
With ATT, your cell phone will be free and for unlimited text, mobile phone calls and emails (max 2GB), you are looking at a monthly bill of $114.99.

Since this is a 2 year contract, we'll use a 2 year total cost (note that the bill doesn't include taxes!!)
Monthly = $69.99 + $25.00 + $20.00 = $114.99
2 year total cost = $2759.76 + $36.00 (Activation fee) = $2795.76
Photobucket

A great option for you is Boost Mobile.
There maybe more upfront costs: $199.99 for the phone, but your monthly bill is $60.00 (unlimited phone calls, SMS, emails).

Your upfront costs for the phone: $199.99
Your monthly bill: $60
Your 2 year total costs: $199.99 + $1440 = $1639
Your savings: $1156.76

This may sound like someone paid me off to endorse Boost Mobile, but in a way, its just time to WAKE UP! Don't get stuck! There are many more options out there now.  Note that I don't have Blackberry.  I actually have a Sanyo Juno, so my monthly bill is $50/monthly.

One cool feature for those with friends overseas is their International Connect program.  For an additional $10/month, you can make unlimited phone calls to: Mexico, Dominican Republic, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Canada (just check the website as some are for unlimited mobile calling, or unlimited landline calling or BOTH!).  In addition to these awesome perks, this includes unlimited SMS to overseas numbers.  This is just an awesome feature as most cell phone companies charge $.25 to $.50 per text message (incoming and outgoing!) so if you have family overseas or a friend traveling with a local SIM card, you can keep in touch without paying out the WAZOO!

The most important thing is do your research, just review your last couple of bills and see how many minutes you actually use and how many SMS you actually send!  You maybe paying more than you currently are with your cell phone company.

While I was writing this blog, researching, comparing cell phone companies, plans and mobile devices, I think I ran into a plan that may be the best fit for most people.  It's affordable and the phones are decent.

Check out Virgin Mobile "Beyond Talk Plans"
Photobucket

Looking at this, this maybe one of the best cell phone plans around.  They are based on the Sprint Network (Boost Mobile is as well) so you will have great reception!

For me, if I were to switch, the $40 plan would be more than plenty! Which would be $960 for 2 years (wowsers).

Check out these options too for pre-paid cell phones:
MobiPCS
VirginMobileUSA

We'll hopefully you can find the best deal for you!!

Technology - Helping us communicate?

Technology - Helping us communicate?

Technology has certainly advanced exponentially in the past 10-15 years, I recall being in high school and pagers was the thing that put you in the in crowd.

Then came cell phones, I remember when Motorola was super cool and I wish I had one.  Well, I did but its not the cell phone pictured on the right, I had a Motorola peanut phone with the customizable faceplates.

Now its 2010, with emails on mobile devices, Facebook (on your phone, on the internet, on your Gaming system), Twitter, iPhones, Android, Blackberry, Instant Messaging (AIM, yahoo, MSN, Google Chat), VoIP (Skype, Fring, Vonage), not to mention text messaging.

With everything keeping us in "touch" cheapened the value of communication?

I miss the days when I would receive a letter, a physical letter, or even a physical card with someone's hand written thoughts.  Now, I receive email greeting cards which to be honest, I hit archive on the gmail button.  100% of email cards I've received throughout the years has never had any inkling of personal thoughts.  Its sort of like a "mandatory email card" that a person created because they received a reminder that it was someone's birthday.

To be honest people say that I am really hard to shop for.  That is true, but honestly, that isn't what I want for my birthday or Christmas, or any holiday, or any day.  Just think of me, and prove that were thinking of me, I would rather have something that came from the heart and not from the wallet.

I deviate from communication.  People ask why I don't have Facebook.  Really? You'll only communicate with people if you can read their thoughts and maybe click a "like" button occasionally?  If that's the only way you'll communicate with me, I'd rather not have your "communication" because you're not really communicating, you are receiving information.

Communication - "an interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs"

Perhaps, I am "old-school", I send Thank you cards, Birthday cards, Christmas cards, all with personal thoughts I share with the intended receiver.

Maybe I just don't understand it.  Is the "like" button sufficient for a person to fully understand your experiences?  I don't think so, I stopped posting pictures online because pictures without a story perpetuates a person's thoughts about a subject, there is no insight given, just confirmation of the receiver's thoughts.

Then again I am blogging, my rant and raving about communication a 1 way medium. Then perhaps you will reply with your thoughts.

It's sort of like text messaging, you can text, "hey b***h" and it can be a good thing or a bad thing, not easily decipherable, perhaps I'll receive more phone calls or messages.
